The Problem
Our client, a state energy authority, was mandated with implementing a far-reaching state law passed in 2019 to address climate change and greenhouse gas emissions in a populous state. The law was considered to be one of the most progressive mandates in the country to address climate change. The authority needed to educate the public about the goals, benefits, and timeframes included in the law, as well as a subsequent plan enacted in 2022. These goals were ambitious – 70% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% zero-emissions by 2040.
The state’s energy transition plan included in the law and the subsequent plan were met with opposition, which called for either a slower implementation or a complete rollback. High inflation and interest rates along with supply chain issues also slowed the speed at which critical projects moved forward.
The Solution
Ichor came up with a comprehensive and aggressive media and communications plan to build awareness of the state’s nation-leading climate and clean energy goals. This included working with the authority to develop fine-tuned topline messaging, expanding the list of critical stakeholders for the authority and its partners to engage, and designing a media rollout strategy meant to better educate the public about the realities and benefits of the plan.
Ichor delivered op-eds, letters to the editors, talking points, fact sheets for the authority to highlight its efforts. We also provided crisis communication assistance to push back against the critics and false narratives pertaining to the state’s climate and clean energy goals. These efforts positioned the authority to better educate the public about its clean energy plans.
