A Fortune 100 manufacturing company sought to improve the internal and external reception of its second annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) report and gain a better understanding of where it could invest to attract and retain top talent in a tight labor market.
Historically, the company had limited DEI engagements and initiatives and was struggling to navigate its new reporting initiative, specifically having difficulty showing ongoing accountability during a time when large, public companies faced growing pressure to be more transparent about their workforce and impact.
We conducted a “premortem” risk assessment of the client’s upcoming DEI report, including risk analyses and B2B/B2C peer benchmarking. We then tailored recommendations for employee engagement around DEI, set the standard for best practices moving forward, and provided strategic and tactical support to mitigate internal risk.
Our client was able to roll out tactical engagement strategies, improve its DEI reporting and outreach, and deepen leadership’s focus and commitment to equity and inclusion long-term, resulting in better traction with current and prospective employees.
Engagement Timeline
January 2022
- Ichor analyzed the company’s prior year DEI report to understand how it landed externally via media outlets, social media, and local sources to frame the current year’s findings.
- We produced stakeholder maps in markets where the client experienced challenges with local outreach and large presence markets so the company would know where to focus its external efforts for maximum positive impact in the current year’s report.
- Our team provided clarity points and recommendations for a “walking deck road show” to solidify buy-in from the company’s C-suite and internal equity task force.
February 2022
- We conducted a pre-mortem risk assessment of the client’s upcoming DEI report, including use of inclusive language, progress on prior year aspirations (e.g., hiring goals), DEI standards, and internal culture shift. Our team analyzed the company’s self-ID process, level of transparency, and user-friendly appearance of data.
- Ichor executed B2B and B2C peer benchmarking to better understand where the company stood among its peers.
- We spearheaded internal employee engagement for the client, including both reactive risk mitigation and proactive engagement strategies – recommendations included employee dialogues, engaging unions, and amplifying employee voices at all levels in communications on DEI.
- To bolster internal alignment, we also recommended recurring employee pulse surveys paired with unconscious and conscious bias training to combat internal criticism around DEI efforts and increase employees’ understanding of the program’s importance.
March 2022
- Ichor improved the client’s external wire frame by making the website more user friendly and integrating inclusive language best practices with consideration to the global sociopolitical landscape.
- We provided internal stakeholder socialization recommendations with a focus on activating engagement in local markets where they previously experienced criticism. As a result, the client published open letters from employees who shifted their understanding of the company’s efforts (for example, progress made towards carbon emissions) to foster an even wider understanding of the company’s efforts domestically and internationally.
